What numbness and tingling usually means (and why it matters)
Numbness and tingling (often described as pins-and-needles, burning, or “electric” sensations) typically points to a nerve being irritated, compressed, or not getting normal blood flow. The most important first step is figuring out where the nerve is being affected—because the symptom may show up in your hand or foot, but the source can be your neck, low back, shoulder, hip, or even wrist/ankle.
In my Brooklyn practice, I commonly see this in people who sit long hours at a laptop, carry heavy bags, commute on the subway with a forward head posture, lift at the gym, or do repetitive work (baristas, musicians, medical staff, designers). The sooner you address it, the better your odds of preventing it from becoming chronic or leading to weakness.
- “Tingling” usually suggests nerve irritation; “numbness” can suggest stronger compression or reduced sensation
- Symptoms can be intermittent at first (only at night, only when biking, only when sitting)
- Pain may or may not be present—some nerve issues are painless but still significant
- Location patterns matter: thumb/index often differs from pinky/ring; big toe differs from outer foot
- If symptoms are progressing, don’t wait—early evaluation is important
Common causes of tingling in arms, hands, legs, or feet
Many cases are mechanical—meaning they come from joint restriction, disc irritation, muscle tightness, or posture that loads the nervous system. For arm and hand symptoms, the neck (cervical spine) is often the source, but shoulder and elbow mechanics can also contribute. For leg and foot symptoms, the low back (lumbar spine) is a frequent driver, though hip and deep gluteal tightness can mimic sciatica.
Sometimes the issue is “local” (like carpal tunnel at the wrist), and other times it’s “proximal” (like a pinched nerve in the neck) or even combined (double-crush syndrome). That’s why a targeted exam is so valuable—treating the wrong spot can delay real relief.
- Cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerve in the neck) causing arm/hand tingling
- Lumbar radiculopathy/sciatica causing leg/foot tingling
- Thoracic outlet–type patterns from shoulder/neck tension and rib/first rib mechanics
- Carpal tunnel or ulnar nerve irritation (wrist/elbow) from repetitive work or cycling
- Peripheral nerve entrapment (piriformis-type irritation, peroneal nerve near the knee, tarsal tunnel at the ankle)
- Posture and workstation factors common in NYC desk workers and hybrid commuters
When to seek urgent care vs. when a chiropractor can help
Most numbness and tingling cases I see can be evaluated safely in the clinic, and many respond well to conservative care. That said, certain symptoms are red flags that need urgent medical evaluation before chiropractic treatment, because they may involve serious neurologic or systemic issues.
If you’re unsure, call my office—my team and I will guide you. I’d rather you get checked the right way than push through symptoms and hope they disappear.
- Go to the ER/urgent care now for: sudden one-sided facial droop, speech changes, severe dizziness, or stroke-like symptoms
- Seek urgent evaluation for: new significant weakness (dropping objects, foot drop), rapidly worsening numbness, or loss of coordination
- Emergency signs: loss of bowel/bladder control, saddle anesthesia (numbness in groin area), severe back pain with fever
- Get checked soon if tingling is persistent at night, spreading, or paired with neck/back pain after a fall or accident
- If symptoms are mild/intermittent and clearly position-related, a chiropractic assessment is often appropriate
How I evaluate and treat numbness/tingling at MK Chiropractic & Wellness
When you come in, I start with a detailed history and exam to identify the most likely source: cervical vs. lumbar vs. peripheral nerve involvement. We’ll review when it started, what triggers it (sitting, sleeping position, lifting, biking), and what makes it better. Then I perform orthopedic and neurologic testing—strength, reflexes, sensation, range of motion, and nerve tension tests—to map the pattern and rule in/out common causes.
Treatment is customized to the findings and may include specific chiropractic adjustments to improve joint motion and reduce nerve irritation, targeted soft tissue work, and corrective exercises to restore stability and posture. If your presentation suggests imaging is needed or a medical referral is more appropriate, I’ll coordinate that—my priority is getting you the right care, not just “more visits.”
- Chiropractic adjustments for cervical or lumbar segment mobility and nerve irritation patterns
- Soft tissue techniques for scalene/pec/forearm, glutes/hip rotators, calf/foot muscles (based on your exam)
- Nerve glides and mobility drills to reduce sensitivity and improve tolerance to daily activity
- Ergonomic coaching for NYC workstations, laptop posture, and subway/commute carry strategies
- Strength and stability exercises (deep neck flexors, scapular control, core/hip stability) to prevent recurrence

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chiropractor help with numbness and tingling in my hands or feet?
Often, yes—when the cause is mechanical nerve irritation from the neck, low back, or surrounding joints and soft tissues. At MK Chiropractic & Wellness, Dr. Mike (Dr. Michael Khodorkovsky) performs a focused orthopedic and neurologic exam to determine whether your symptoms fit a pattern like cervical radiculopathy, lumbar radiculopathy/sciatica, or a peripheral nerve entrapment. If chiropractic care is appropriate, we use targeted adjustments, soft tissue work, and rehab exercises to reduce nerve irritation and improve function. If your case suggests a medical cause or red flags, we refer you out promptly.
How do I know if my tingling is coming from my neck/back vs. carpal tunnel or another local issue?
Pattern and testing matter. Neck-related symptoms often follow a dermatomal pattern (for example, thumb/index vs. pinky/ring differences) and may change with neck position. Carpal tunnel tends to be worse with wrist flexion/extension, gripping, or at night, and usually affects the thumb/index/middle fingers more. In our DUMBO Brooklyn office, Dr. Mike uses nerve tension tests, range of motion, strength/reflex checks, and palpation to identify whether the primary driver is spinal, peripheral, or combined (double-crush).
How many chiropractic visits does numbness/tingling usually take to improve?
It depends on severity, duration, and whether there’s true nerve compression vs. irritation, plus factors like posture, workstation setup, and sleep position. Some NYC patients feel changes within a few visits if symptoms are recent and position-related; longer-standing cases can take a structured plan over several weeks. At MK Chiropractic & Wellness, Dr. Michael Khodorkovsky sets measurable goals (symptom frequency, range of motion, strength, tolerance to sitting/sleeping) and adjusts the plan based on your response—no cookie-cutter schedules.
Do you accept insurance for numbness and tingling treatment in Brooklyn?
Yes. MK Chiropractic & Wellness works with many insurance plans and networks, including UHC, Aetna, Cigna, and ASH. Coverage varies by plan, so our team can verify benefits and explain any copays or visit limits. To check your benefits and schedule, call (347) 313-8526.
